Opinion: “Grab Them By The Pussy” Should Not Be The Reason For Trump’s Downfall.

The Washington Post‘s leaked video should not be what ruins Trump.

By now, everyone has heard the conversation between Donald Trump and Access Hollywood‘s Billy Bush that was captured via hot mic in 2005. The political world is reeling, with prominent Republicans withdrawing support, Paul Ryan pulling his Janus-faced “I denounce Trump but gee golly I sure support him” move for the millionth time, and seemingly legitimate stirs about the RNC discussing the viability of a replacement candidate.

But frankly, Trump supporters who are just now jumping ship and his long-time detractors who say that this is the last straw, this should be his death knell—they’re both wrong.

Yes, his words were vile and misogynistic, and they demonstrated a complete sense of entitlement to women’s bodies and a disregard for their sexual agency. What he dismissed in his faux-apology as “locker room banter” was in fact the boastful declaration of a man who insists that he gets what he wants regardless of the damage inflicted on others. Sexual gratification is the prize, the women from whom he seeks it are just obstacles to get around.

But none of this is even remotely surprising coming from Trump. It might be the most explicit and on-the-nose instance for conservative Christians to balk at, but it’s completely in keeping with his comments that we’ve been inundated with for over a year. He has called women fat, suggested that female reporters who are tough on him on interviews are on their period, and remarked that women who get abortions should face some sort of punishment. These aren’t even insinuations of misogyny, they are declarations.

So what makes the leaked audio so much worse, what isolates it as a singular damning incident whereas all that preceded it was somehow permissible? Seriously, what was it? Those bad, mean words he used?

Let’s take a step back for a moment. Trump has an insatiable drive for power, and that drive is immoral. (Of course, that’s the case for a staggering majority of successful, high-powered businessmen, but that’s a story for later.) He has repeatedly not paid workers for their labor. He has destroyed land that is vital for reducing pollution in order to build golf courses. A rapacious and monomaniacal history of development and clawing his way to the top at all costs is the Trump story, and it’s the narrative he has clearly internalized.

Sexual assault is not about sex the way that healthy people conceive of it; rather, it is another way of imposing power over someone else. Trump grabbing women “by the pussy” is not an aberration from the Trump story—it’s another moment in keeping with the rest of the narrative. He couldn’t do anything to deviate from that story…people like Trump don’t deal in nuance and complexity. They operate on brute force in a singular, sustained direction.

So why the hell did anyone have to hear those words from his mouth to unequivocally condemn him? Either you condone the implications of what he said on that bus in 2005 or you denounce it, and if you find yourself in the latter category then you should have been able to discern what kind of man Trump is long before that video leaked.

Why did we have to hear it from his mouth when women who have worked with Trump in the past have spoken out about these very issues? He caught former Miss America contestants off guard by kissing them on the lips, he groped a former business partner in his daughter Ivanka’s room, and he is going to court in December for a lawsuit whose plaintiff claims that he sexually assaulted her in the 1990s, when she was 13 years old.

So I repeat, who needed to hear it from his mouth? We shouldn’t give “the benefit of the doubt” to people who do atrocious things if we don’t have the rare opportunity to hear them name those atrocious things themselves. It is an indictment of our country if this is the single incident that prevents Trump from becoming president, if everything that came before could be excused but now this is what we condemn.
