America’s Biggest Scumbag Sheriff Might Be Facing Time Behind Bars.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is 84 years old, but he has every intention of violating human rights until the day he croaks. Just like when Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia did the world a favor by shuffling off his mortal coil, many will surely celebrate on the day that Arpaio’s sojourn on planet Earth ends and he returns to the Hell that spawned him.

But the self-proclaimed “Toughest Sheriff In America” might have another significant obstacle preventing him from securing a seventh term. Namely, he is facing charges of contempt that, with any luck, could land him in jail for up to six months.

His list of offenses both moral and legal is extensive. He has encouraged officers to use blatant racial profiling tactics to pull over and request papers from anyone they suspect of being undocumented. This has of course resulted in countless immigrants (mostly Latinos and people of color) ending up in jail despite not breaking any state laws—which is all that Arpaio and his officers are authorized to enforce.

The knee-jerk reactionary response to this is generally something to the tune of “Well they shouldn’t be here illegally anyways!” Besides the so-obvious-you-shouldn’t-have-to-say-it hypocrisy of these folks defending Arpaio’s own actions—which are of course illegal—many of the people who end up arrested simply don’t have their documents on their person when they are pulled over. Most of us, after all, aren’t inclined to bring a whole lot of paperwork when we’re just headed to the grocery store.

His “immigration patrols” (now there’s a hell of a euphemism!) have conducted raids whose blatant disregard for human rights is almost unfathomable. He has pushed hard to arm deputies with automatic weapons to prevent “illegal aliens attempting to escape.” Children as young as 6 and pregnant women have been arrested and sent to “Tent City,” the feather in Arpaio’s cap.

This outdoor prison in the sweltering Arizona desert has been cited as one of the most egregious violations of Constitutional and human rights in our country. This past June, a news crew visited Tent City. Temperatures inside the tents reached 129 degrees Fahrenheit at night. An inmate said, “I only slept for about an hour. I woke up sweaty; my whole body. I had to take off my shirt and I was just drenched in sweat.” When someone noted that the Gatorade had expired three years ago, Arpaio’s response was “So what?”

His attempts to degrade inmates (many of them nonviolent offenders and many wrongfully detained, let’s keep in mind) include providing them only pink underwear to wear. (If we weren’t already outraged at his barbarity, we could still criticize his subpar imagination.)

A federal judge ordered Arpaio to stop trying to enforce federal immigration law, as that falls outside his purview as a county sheriff. Arpaio pretended to comply and even made some half-hearted gestures to at least create the illusion that he might be turning a new leaf. According to Esther Lee at ThinkProgress, “Arpaio has made insincere efforts to address racial biases, including holding court-required community outreach meetings in districts with few Latino residents and declining to show up at meetings.”

And he has continued to target Latinos and immigrants, using illegal profiling and defying a judge’s orders. That’s where the contempt charge comes in. If he is convicted, Arpaio could do six months of time in jail. (With any luck, he’ll end up in Tent City and get a heat stroke in his pink undies!)

Arpaio is up for re-election on November 7th. Naturally, he’s furious about the action being taken at this time. Like any good conservative conspiracy theorist, he blamed Obama. (Unsurprisingly, Arpaio is an enthusiastic Trump supporter. He spoke at a Trump rally in Phoenix this past July.)

His campaign released the following statement: “First and foremost, it is clear that the corrupt Obama Justice Department is trying to influence my re-election as Sheriff of Maricopa County. It is no coincidence that this announcement comes 28 days before the election and the day before early voting starts. It is a blatant abuse of power and the people of Maricopa County should be as outraged as I am.”

Well, they aren’t.

The Arizona Republic reported that protestors outside the courthouse “erupted in cheers, hugs and tears” when they heard the announcement that federal prosecutors will pursue the case. “Si se puede! Si se puede!” ( “Yes, we can!”) they cheered from where they gathered, near “a massive, inflatable doll depicting the lawman in shackles and striped jail garb.”
